Less Than Truckload

LTL shipping decisions built around freight class, handling and delivery needs.

LTL coordination requires accurate freight class, precise dimensions and a clear understanding of pickup, delivery and accessorial requirements before a rate can be confirmed.

When this service fits

LTL is appropriate when a shipment does not fill a trailer and the freight class, handling requirements and transit time expectations are compatible with shared-space transportation. It is not always the lowest-cost option when accessorials, handling sensitivity or transit requirements are factored in.

  • Shipments that occupy a partial trailer (typically 1–12 pallets)
  • Freight with a defined freight class and accurate dimensions
  • Shipments where transit time estimates are acceptable
  • Freight that can be handled with standard dock equipment
  • Shipments with manageable accessorial requirements

Freight class and density

Freight class is determined by density, stowability, handling difficulty and liability. An incorrect class is one of the most common causes of LTL rate adjustments after delivery.

Density
Weight per cubic foot. Higher density generally means a lower freight class and lower rate.
Stowability
Whether the freight can be stacked or loaded alongside other shipments without special handling.
Handling
Ease of loading and unloading. Fragile, irregular or hazardous freight typically carries a higher class.
Liability
Value per pound and susceptibility to damage or theft.

Accessorials and delivery requirements

Accessorial charges are additional fees applied when a shipment requires services beyond standard pickup and delivery. Identifying these upfront prevents unexpected charges and delivery delays.

Liftgate service
Required when the pickup or delivery location does not have a loading dock.
Residential delivery
Applied when the delivery address is a residence rather than a commercial location.
Limited access
Locations with restricted access — construction sites, schools, churches, storage facilities.
Inside delivery
Required when freight must be moved beyond the threshold of the delivery location.
Appointment scheduling
Required when the consignee requires a scheduled delivery window.
Notification
Required when the carrier must contact the consignee before delivery.

Frequently asked questions

When is LTL appropriate?
LTL is typically appropriate when a shipment does not fill a trailer and the freight class, handling requirements and transit time expectations are compatible with shared-space transportation.
What is freight class and why does it matter?
Freight class is a standardized classification system used by LTL carriers to determine pricing. It is based on density, stowability, handling and liability. An incorrect freight class can result in a rate adjustment after delivery.
What accessorials should I plan for?
Common LTL accessorials include liftgate service, residential delivery, limited access, inside delivery, appointment scheduling and notification fees. Identifying these upfront prevents unexpected charges.
Does WW&J guarantee LTL transit times?
No. LTL transit times are estimates provided by the carrier and are not guaranteed unless a time-definite service is specifically confirmed for the shipment.
